Tampa General Hospital
The Opportunity

This is an outstanding opportunity to join a dynamic and distinguished executive team as the Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer (COO) for this nationally recognized, Level 1 Trauma Center with 1000+ beds located on beautiful Davis Islands in Tampa, Florida. The COO will have the opportunity to work in a highly collaborative environment to drive strong operational performance, strategic implementation, and clinical transformation through aligned efficiencies and technology.

Under the leadership of CEO, John Couris, who took the helm in 2017, TGH continues its era of strategic innovative growth and transformation. Building upon its rich synergies and patient-centric mission, TGH seeks to further develop leading-edge, seamless healthcare delivery across its service areas. To meet TGH’s ambitions and strategic objectives, a national search is underway for a distinguished operational leader to serve as the COO for Tampa General Hospital.

The COO must excel at developing and leading high-performing teams and have a superb track record of creating collaborative partnerships across the clinical enterprise. The ideal candidate will be operationally stellar, highly anticipatory, a bridge builder and a catalyst who can effectively navigate a complex academic setting. The COO will proactively identify solutions, drive results, and effectively fulfill the mission of Tampa General Hospital.

The culture of TGH is predicated upon an AKTiVe approach to leadership. This evidence-based active leadership model embodies four key qualities:

Authenticity
An authentic leader is honest about who they are and what they believe. Before making decisions, they seek input from their team members. They provide constructive feedback to highlight strengths and identify areas for improvement. They “walk the walk” by being a role model and they keep their promises.

Kindness
A kind leader considers the well-being of their team when providing support and making decisions. They listen to their team members, treat them with respect and consider their feelings. They identify ways to improve as learning opportunities and offer assistance in a nonjudgmental manner. They show appreciation to their team members by recognizing and rewarding their hard work.

Transparency
A transparent leader is clear and honest about the reasons for their decisions and what they expect from their team. They hold briefings to discuss organizational changes and encourage their team members to ask questions and share their views. They provide positive and constructive feedback, so their team members always know where they stand.

Vulnerability
A vulnerable leader is willing to show weakness and admit when they are wrong. They view mistakes as opportunities to learn so they will do better in the future. They apologize when appropriate, acknowledge that they do not have all the answers and ask for help when needed.

When enacted through the specific behaviors of our leaders, these qualities help us create a positive and productive working environment where our team members can thrive. As a result, we cultivate engagement, psychological safety, and trust.

Through embracing the AKTiVe leadership model, the COO will positively impact employee engagement, quality, patient safety, and service excellence for outstanding patient experience and meaningful outcomes.

The new organization, the University of South Florida Tampa General Physicians, is jointly governed by both TGH and USF.

TGH and USF have worked closely together for nearly 50 years, since the opening of the medical school in the early 1970s. This endeavor builds on this longstanding relationship and enables the two organizations to advance more quickly and broadly on a variety of strategic goals.
