The University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical Center are seeking an accomplished healthcare leader to serve as Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Department of Pediatrics and Director of Operations for University of Maryland Golisano Children’s Hospital. This is a unique opportunity to serve as the senior administrative and operational leader for one of the region’s most important and rapidly growing pediatric enterprises.
Supported by a transformative $50 million philanthropic gift, University of Maryland Golisano Children’s Hospital is positioned for continued growth as a destination of choice for pediatric care, education, and discovery. The CAO plays a critical leadership role in advancing this vision—partnering with physician leaders, nursing leadership, and executive teams to ensure excellence across clinical operations, academic administration, financial stewardship, and the patient and family experience.
Reporting directly to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, with a matrixed relationship to the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of UMMC, the CAO serves as the primary operational executive accountable for achieving the Children’s Hospital’s strategic, operational, and performance goals. The role bridges the missions of the School of Medicine and the Medical Center, ensuring alignment across clinical care, education, and research.
Key responsibilities include translating academic and clinical strategy into operational execution; overseeing departmental administration, budgeting, and financial performance; leading day-to-day hospital operations across inpatient, ambulatory, and specialty programs; advancing quality, safety, and family-centered care; and supporting research growth, philanthropy, and market development.
The Department of Pediatrics is a large, multi-divisional academic department with more than 120 faculty across 21 divisions, a $70 million operating budget, nationally recognized research programs, and robust residency and fellowship training programs.
The University of Maryland Golisano Children’s Hospital operates approximately 90 licensed beds, with specialized services including Maryland’s largest Level IV NICU, pediatric intensive care, oncology, cardiology, transplant services, and a dedicated pediatric emergency department. The hospital is deeply committed to innovation, access, and family-centered care for children across Maryland and beyond.
