THE OPPORTUNITY/PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
UAB Medicine is seeking a strategic, enterprise-level Chief Ambulatory Officer (CAO) to serve as the executive leader responsible for the strategic direction, operational performance, and growth of UAB Medicine's ambulatory system across academic and community care settings. The Chief Ambulatory Officer will provide executive oversight for one of the nation's largest and most complex academic ambulatory enterprises, encompassing approximately 300 clinics, more than 4,500 providers, and a rapidly expanding network of academic, community, and acquired ambulatory assets across Alabama.
- Ten (10)+ years of executive leadership experience within a complex academic medical center, integrated health system, or large physician enterprise, with significant responsibility for ambulatory operations, strategy, and growth.
- Demonstrated success leading large-scale ambulatory networks and service lines across academic and community-based settings.
- Proven track record driving ambulatory integration, operational excellence, performance improvement, and growth across complex healthcare organizations.
- Strong business and financial acumen, including experience developing business plans, evaluating investments, and advancing new clinical programs and care delivery models.
- Understanding of physician practice management, provider alignment, compensation models, and medical group operations.
- Experience leading within highly matrixed and politically complex environments, building alignment among physicians, administrators, and executive stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead transformational change, navigate complexity, and execute strategic initiatives that improve access, quality, operational performance, and financial results.
- Strong knowledge of healthcare delivery trends, particularly those impacting ambulatory care, academic medicine, physician enterprise growth, and evolving care models.
- Recognized as a trusted, collaborative leader with exceptional relationship-building skills and a track record of developing high-performing teams.
- Effective communicator with the ability to synthesize complex information, influence diverse audiences, and deliver compelling recommendations.
- Visible, approachable, and mission-driven leader committed to supporting providers, staff, patients, and families.
- Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or a related field is required.
