      The Opportunity
      The Chair, Department of Surgery is responsible for oversight of clinical quality, provider performance, the effective administration and growth of the NorthShore Hospitals (NorthShore) Surgery department. The Chair will be someone with great passion and enthusiasm for delivering the highest quality of care and will work tirelessly to advance the Department of Surgery, as well as NorthShore Hospitals as a whole, to the next level of excellence. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success in an academic environment and significant experience leading clinical operations, program development, and recruitment of diverse providers to achieve superior clinical outcomes and strategic growth priorities.

      While developing strong trusting relationships within the department and the broader Endeavor Health Medical Group will be critically important, it is also essential that the Chair build strong relationships with NorthShore’s independent affiliated physicians, supporting the advancement of the Endeavor Health Clinically Integrated Network and collaborative relationships among primary and specialty care physicians. The Chair will recruit and retain world class clinicians and will help develop/mentor future physician leaders.

      The NorthShore Department of Surgery plays a central role in the system’s mission to help everyone in our communities be their best. It supports a wide range of clinical programs, research initiatives, and education training programs. There are 9 division heads within the department and more than $1.25M in philanthropic funds, $2.8M in research funds and $1.6M block grant funding for education, fellowships, physician stipends and other initiatives under the Chair’s supervision. The department performs over 22,000 surgeries and over 227,000 outpatient visits annually. The department is home to over 30 research grants, 71 active clinical trials, and enjoys externally funded research in excess of almost 6 million annually with significant internally funded research activity.

      Investigators within the Department of Surgery have demonstrated their commitment to research through the following accomplishments:
      • Participation in a multi-institution randomized trial of robotic nipple sparing mastectomy for breast cancer and high-risk breast patients.

      • Within otolaryngology, promising preliminary data for the VivAer study was presented at COSM 2024.This study has further improved and become increasingly significant in the time since.
      • Participation in the ICARUS International Collaborative Aquablation Research Study
      • NIH funded study: Enhanced use of patient reported outcomes for patients with BPH
      • NIH funded study to examine TNF blockade for chronic BPH
      • Implementation of a robotic abdominal surgery curriculum to improve resident and surgeon performance for robotic surgery, presentations at the ERAS society, AHPBA and ACS meetings
      • CisionVision Prospective Trial: Utilizing imaging AI techniques to help predict damage to surrounding structures and reduce reoperation rates, ARPA-H funded
      • Research collaboration on a DoD grant with University of Chicago, the development and validation of a breast cancer recurrence model using AI on pathology slides, publication in NPJ Breast Cancer 2024
      • ZFEN multi-institution Endeavor Study to examine vascular surgery outcomes
      • Oral presentation at the Western Surgical Association meeting on the personal and family history tool to detect patients at increased risk of a pathogenic genetic variants
      • Establishing a Lymphedema surgery program to reduce risk of lymphedema for patients undergoing axillary node dissection, published in Annals of Surgical Oncology
      • Training of over 5 research fellows in surgical research

      As evidenced above, active research programs are an important part of the Department’s mission. Working collaboratively with the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) to leverage the value of recent board investments made in the Endeavor Health Research Institute will be a critical area of opportunity for the next Chair, Surgery.

      Lastly, the Department of Surgery has also been instrumental in garnering philanthropic support for the institution through the NorthShore Hospitals Foundation. Donations from grateful patients and area foundations have been used to support endowed chairs, clinical program expansion, research initiatives and new buildings. This history of philanthropy will be expanded across the System in partnership with the Endeavor Health Chief Development Officer.

      The Role of Physician Executive, Endeavor Health Medical Group (EHMG), Surgery
      The Endeavor Health Medical Group Physician Executive for Surgery is critical for maximizing the impact of the service line for the Endeavor Health Medical Group. This leader partners with their administrative dyad partner to build a consistent, optimized, and differentiated employed practice across all of the Endeavor Health service areas. This position will lead provider recruitment for the EHMG and clinical program development to improve outcomes, increase access, improve patient/team member experience while improving on overall provider engagement.

      The EHMG Physician Executive, Surgery is the key physician leader who develops the clinical vision for the EHMG in the area of surgery, including what services will be offered, where they can be performed most effectively and by what providers, and sets expectations for superior clinical outcomes, as well as patient loyalty and team member engagement. The EHMG Physician Executive will be a leader with enthusiasm for delivery of the highest quality of care and will work tirelessly to advance a consistent, optimized, and differentiated clinical service line in the Endeavor Health Medical Group. This inspirational leader will be a part of an organization that encourages its team members to achieve their career goals and maximize their personal and professional potential. This leader will cultivate strong trusting relationships across Endeavor Health. The EHMG Physician Executive will recruit and retain world class clinicians and will help develop/mentor a diverse team of future physician leaders.

      In tandem with the EHMG President for Specialty Practices and administrative leaders, the EHMG Physician Executive will share responsibilities for planning, capital, and operational budgeting and for setting the cultural tone for Surgery and the organization. This role will collaborate with the EHMG executive leadership team, physician and APP leaders, front line physicians and APPs and executives from across the health system in regard to surgical specialties. This role will inspire others to achieve the mission, vision, values, strategies and goals of the Medical Group and the Health System and must be able to communicate and articulate the current state performance, celebrate victories and safely dissect shortfalls. This role will be a highly visible internal and external advocate for the profession and subspecialty differentiation at Endeavor Health.

      Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
      The NorthShore Hospitals Chair, Department of Surgery & Endeavor Health Medical Group Physician Executive, Surgery will be responsible for the following:
      Administrative
      • Appropriately structures and integrates the activities of the Department and Medical Group, establishing standards and patient care programs and services across the NorthShore Hospitals campuses, EHMG, and the CIN, ensuring functionality as one system.
      • Develops and executes a vision for the Department and EHMG surgical specialties with clear priorities and measurable goals and objectives that align with the mission of Endeavor Health.
      • Actively leads efforts to standardize processes, protocols and practice expectations across Endeavor Health to achieve superior outcomes.
      • Identifies opportunities to enhance and expand clinical services to facilitate growth of the practice, department and medical group. Understands physician and practice referral patterns, their impact on the Department/Medical Group and identifies opportunities to improve utilization.
      • Maintains loyal customer relationships, monitoring patient loyalty surveys and implement strategies to support improvement and foster excellence.
      • Develops robust clinical programs and leads subspecialty program development growth across health system.
      • Develops and maintains collaborative relations with all executive and medical leaders.
      • Work collaboratively, build relationships and partners with community organizations and providers, understanding how Endeavor Health can best support their needs.

      Clinical
      • Advances the clinical activities of the Department and EHMG surgical specialties including responsibilities for quality of care, continuous quality improvement, close monitoring of outcomes and adherence to system standards for access, communication and service.
      • Represents specialty expertise within the field of General Surgery or one of its subspecialties.
      • Evaluates quality metrics and standards and works with physicians as needed to address quality and compliance problems and mitigate associated risk.
      • Partners with risk management to monitor and take actions necessary to ensure the highest level of safety.
      • Implements and ensures compliance with evidence-based care protocols.
      • Develop and maintain clinical credibility, clinical excellence, and respect in the community.
      • Oversee physician trends in performance and initiates effective and sustainable changes to optimize clinical care.
      • Actively leads efforts to standardize care delivery across Endeavor Health in support of superior outcomes.
      • Develops and grows cutting edge clinical programs of excellence and leads surgical subspecialty program development growth across health system to enhance reach and differentiate Endeavor Health to the community and beyond.
      • Responsible for developing and nurturing relationships with NorthShore Hospitals affiliated physicians and members of Medical Group to achieve overall quality, growth and financial objectives.
      • Ensures the implementation and adherence to system policies and procedures.

      Education
      • Serves as a senior academic leader for the Department and NorthShore Hospitals.
      • Responsible for the overall performance of the NorthShore Hospital Surgical residency program and fellowship programs.
      • Attains and maintains rank of Clinical Associate Professor or full Clinical Professor at University of Chicago (U of C) Pritzker School of Medicine. Actively supports members of the Department in pursuit of academic titles and in promotion efforts.
      • Maintains strong working relationships with the U of C Chair of Surgery and other key leaders at U of C (UChicago Medicine).
      • Participates in the teaching of medical students, residents’ fellows and other trainees.
      • Recognizes significant academic accomplishments by Department staff and trainees. Takes an active role in mentoring and supporting academic interests of Department members.
      • Fosters academic growth of faculty members through usually accepted channels, i.e., Peer review, journal articles, presentations, editorial board service.
      • Monitors and evaluates program effectiveness and effect changes required for improvement.
      • Develops appropriate M&M Conferences and lectures as curriculum demands.
      • Work closely with the Chief Academic Officer and Office of Academic Affairs to maximize the educational impact of the Department. Responsible the stewardship of GME resources within the Department of Surgery, collaborating with NorthShore Hospitals leadership to maximize impact of funding.
      • Fosters the expansion of academic activities and collaboration across EHMG. Creates a culture of inquiry where medical specialists actively contribute to clinical improvement efforts by leveraging the value of applied research across Endeavor Health.
      • Ensures development of appropriate medical education programs for the department including undergraduate and graduate medical education where appropriate but also including continuing medical education for members of the department, in-service education for hospital personnel that support the department’s activities and EHMG service line.
      Research
      • Works with the Endeavor Health Research Institute Chief Scientific Officer to lead and implement planning for the direction of research programs, setting goals and direction for the department and EHMG service line.
      • Supports faculty in ongoing clinical research and publications in areas of interest.
      • Serves as liaison between Research Institute and various partners and research principals in establishing and executing research projects and programs.
      • Ensures compliance of all research activities with relevant review boards.
      • Maintains active involvement in professional organizations to advance research standing and academic recognition of Endeavor Health
      • Identifies and obtains appropriate outside funding to support ongoing research activities. Assists research physician and personnel to identify and obtain appropriate outside funding to support ongoing research activities.
      • Identifies research programs and researchers that align with Department, EHMG and the Endeavor Health overall system growth and differentiation goals. Partners with CSO to recruit and retain research personnel that are accretive to Endeavor.
      Growth & Recruitment
      • Recruits key leaders and physicians within the Department and EHMG for Surgery. Mentors and develops leaders to grow and expand their respective subspecialty areas/divisions within the academic, clinical, and research communities of their respective specialties. Continually strives for high quality and expertise, by recognizing the incredible value brought to our organization, our patients, and our community by inviting diverse candidates to be a part of our team.
      • Participates in the annual recruitment process of residency and fellowship program candidates.
      • Oversees practice growth targets to ensure physicians are performing to the appropriate Fair Market Value benchmark.
      • Works with physicians below growth targets to develop and implement an action plan for meeting performance standards.
      • Maintains loyal customer relationships in support of growth objectives, monitoring patient loyalty surveys and implementing strategies to foster growth.
      • Enhances and expands clinical services to facilitate strong strategic growth of the practice, department and EHMG service line. Understands physician and practice referral patterns, their impact on the Endeavor Health system. Identify opportunities to improve utilization and implement tactics in support of growth.
      Financial Management
      • Responsible for achieving financial performance objectives of Endeavor Health, Department of Surgery, NorthShore Hospitals and EHMG.
      • In partnership with administrative leadership develops, implements and provides ongoing review of annual and long-term capital and operating budgets for the department and EHMG service line and works with hospital/practice leaders to determine hospital-based capital requirements for the service line.
      • Monitors key revenue cycle metrics and activates changes to improve performance as needed.
      • Responsible for achieving provider productivity targets and fostering a culture that values continuous improvement in efficiency and effectiveness.
      • Actively manage financial performance in partnership with administrative leadership.

      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
      The Endeavor Health NorthShore Hospitals Chair, Department of Surgery & Endeavor Health Medical Group Physician Executive, Surgery will possess the following:
      • At least 10 years’ experience in the area of expertise in Surgery.
      • Minimum five (5) years of administrative experience as a Chair, Vice Chair, Division Chief, practice lead, or similar position.

      Education / Licensure / Certification
      • Graduate of nationally accredited and recognized medical school.
