The Opportunity

Corewell Health is seeking an accomplished, results-oriented Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead operations within one of the nation’s most recognized and admired health care organizations. The COO will be responsible for overseeing the organization's vast and complex operations, spanning three regions, 21 hospitals, over 12,000 physicians and advanced practice providers, and more than 16,000 nurses dedicated to delivering simple, affordable, equitable, and exceptional care. With a strong focus on delivering outcomes that align with Corewell Health's mission and vision, the successful candidate will implement strategies to enhance efficiency, elevate patient care, and expand services to improve the health and well-being of the communities it serves.

The COO will also play a critical role in establishing Corewell Health as a blueprint for care transformation and operational excellence, setting new standards for healthcare delivery across Michigan. By leading efforts that integrate innovative practices and operational efficiencies, and driving partnership with the health plan, the COO will contribute to a model that can be replicated to transform operations at a broader scale.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Corewell Health President & Chief Executive Officer, the COO is a key member of the Corewell Health Executive Leadership Team. The COO has operational accountability for Corewell Health and will, in collaboration with the executive leadership team, drive process transformation to enhance efficiency, quality, and value leveraging Corewell’s reputation for excellence in experience and innovation. The COO will further integrate the health system and will partner with the health plan (Priority Health) to enhance the Care & Coverage model across the enterprise. Leading through collaboration, accountability, and commitment to excellence, this leader will optimize performance across Corewell Health through strong cultural alignment, engaging all in the purpose and mission of Corewell Health.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Builds Organizational Capabilities
  • Collaborates with organizational leaders to foster systemness and remove silos, promoting collective accountability across Corewell Health regions.
  • Partners with the CEO and other executive team members to execute the strategy and long-term business plans, driving growth and sustainability.
  • Fosters and engages in positive relationships with system shared services teams and collaborates to develop solutions that are in the best interest of the entire Corewell Health System.
  • Collaborates with the coverage leadership team and the Chief Clinical Officer to optimize the advantages of the Corewell Health integrated health system and leverages the synergies across the system for implementing value-based models that improve health for all.
Innovation
  • Fosters an environment open to new ideas to create value for all stakeholders to drive efficiencies through the use of technology and digital capabilities to make services more accessible, efficient, and affordable.

Transformation and Operations
  • Creates a seamless, highly responsive service organization where the focus is on outstanding quality outcomes and the highest level of service to all customers / constituencies (physicians, staff nurses, physician practice administrators, other care givers, the patients, and their families).
  • Leads the day-to-day operations of the organization, ensuring excellence across key performance indicators such as cost, quality, safety, experience, and productivity while driving continuous improvement.
  • Partners with leadership to ensure operational accountability to the annual operating plan, including capital deployment, dynamic budgeting, and revenue capture.
  • Works in partnership with the CCO on physician-based initiatives that touch on both care practice and clinical operations.

Enterprise Initiative
  • Fosters a culture of excellence by aligning diverse teams around shared goals and ensuring consistency across all regions.
  • Partners with the Chief Clinical Officer in leading population and community health strategies that address health equity, meet community needs, and support the Corewell Health mission to drive measurable impact in underserved areas.
  • Collaborates with key external partners to further advance Corewell Health’s mission to foster a culture of research, education, and innovation.
  • Oversees and/or develops key partnerships to enhance the delivery of outcomes across the enterprise, including through formal joint ventures and less formal collaborations.
  • In partnership with the CEO and government affairs, advocates and collaborates with key stakeholders, regulators, and political representatives to improve the regulatory and reimbursement environment of healthcare.

Candidate Qualifications
The Corewell Health Chief Operating Officer will be an accomplished healthcare leader with a proven track record of success as a senior executive. This individual will bring extensive expertise in healthcare administration, excelling in key areas such as clinical operations, change management, finance, physician relations, human resources, and strategic planning. The Chief Operating Officer will provide strong leadership to guide change management efforts, uniting teams and overseeing initiatives that improve operations and support organizational transformation.

The COO will be recognized for their exceptional communication, listening, and interpersonal skills, enabling them to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, team members at all organizational levels, and the broader community. They will be a strategic operational leader who excels at working seamlessly across diverse groups to drive cultural and operational transformation. The COO will have the following experience and qualifications:
  • Ten plus (10+) years of senior healthcare administration experience.
  • Seven plus (7+) years of relevant executive leadership experience.
  • Experience in a senior leadership role with a proven track record of accomplishment in leading a complex healthcare organization to growth and sustained profitability.
  • A “systems thinker” who demonstrates an understanding, innovative thinking, and expertise with various operating entities of an integrated healthcare system.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading innovative initiatives that achieve superior quality, favorable financial outcomes, and high patient, physician, and employee satisfaction.
  • Exceptional critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Strategic planning abilities and experience.

Credentials
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in public health, healthcare administration, nursing, business administration, graduate of accredited medical school and completion of accredited residency program, or related field is required.
  • A master’s degree or equivalent (MBA, MHA or similar management degree) is preferred.
