PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Cone Health, a $3.5 billion private, nonprofit, multi-hospital integrated health system that is financially strong, innovative, growing, and a leader in value-based care delivery, is seeking an Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) during the most dynamic and transformational time in the history of the organization that serves residents in a hyper-competitive and fast-growing market in central North Carolina.

This is an excellent opportunity for a progressive and dynamic human resources leader. Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Human Resources Officer will foster a culture of trust, transparency, and open communication, and will serve as an accessible and visible leader who models organizational values. The CHRO will create the talent and human capital vision and strategy, in alignment with Cone Health’s Strategic Vision 2030, to successfully execute its key objectives and maximize the organization’s competitive advantage. Working collaboratively with the CEO and other members of the senior leadership team, the CHRO will bring a contemporary approach to the changing dynamics of the healthcare industry and lead efforts to competitively position Cone Health as an employer of choice and to assure the successful recruitment and retention of a high-quality workforce to enable the organization to deliver on its mission.  

The CHRO is responsible for developing high-performing people, systems, and processes to manage and administer Cone Health’s human capital functions. They will provide counsel to the organization’s leaders, develop strategic and tactical workforce plans, and deliver on HR initiatives in support of patient care, financial well-being, and customer service objectives. They will promote a culture in the organization that is positive, fair and accountable.    

Above all, this individual will help the organization and its people adapt and thrive in an evolving healthcare industry and will inspire the organization to be a transformative leader in the central North Carolina community and the broader healthcare industry.

THE ORGANIZATION
Cone Health is a private, nonprofit integrated health system with over $3.5 billion in total net revenues and four acute care hospitals, a behavioral health hospital, six ambulatory care centers, an ACO that manages and coordinates care for more than 200,000 patients, and a health plan. Founded in 1953, Cone Health now has over 14,000 employees, including more than 1,200 employed primary and specialty care physicians and advanced practice providers. The system has a medical staff of more than 2,600 professionals, including 1,700 physicians.

In December 2024, Cone Health became the second nonprofit health system in the nation to become part of Risant Health, a new and innovative nonprofit system created by Kaiser Foundation Hospitals with the goal to expand and accelerate the adoption of value-based care in multi-payer, multi-provider, community-based health system environments and improve the health of millions of people in communities across the country. Cone Health includes five hospitals (four acute care hospitals and a behavioral health hospital) with a combined 1,231 licensed beds, six ambulatory care centers, four outpatient surgery centers (including joint ventures), 13 urgent care centers, more than 120 physician practices, and one retirement community. 

Cone Health employs more than 1,200 primary and specialty care physicians and advanced practice providers who are members of the physician-led Cone Health Medical Group. Additionally, Cone Health operates the Triad Healthcare Network, one of the nation’s most successful ACOs that includes over 2,700 Cone Health and independent physicians and advanced practice providers in the greater Greensboro Triad area who coordinate care for more than 200,000 patients. 

HealthTeam Advantage (HTA), a subsidiary of Cone Health, offers Medicare Advantage plans to 22,000+ Medicare beneficiaries residing in 33 North Carolina counties with the goal of improving the health and well-being of its communities.

EXPERIENCE AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • The candidate must possess a minimum of seven (7) years of senior leadership in Human Resources or related management experience.
  • Experience in a large, integrated healthcare system is preferred, but candidates coming from outside of industry will be considered.
  • Demonstrated track record of leadership and must be successful in a team environment.
  • A dynamic leader with excellent communication skills, including positive and effective presentation skills. 
  • Outstanding management and leadership capabilities with a demonstrated track record of leading and developing strong teams. 
  • Proven ability to embrace diversity in every respect.
  • Strong workforce planning skills, particularly around program development, recruiting, cultural sensitivity and succession planning.
  • Strong technical skills and deep knowledge in HR functional areas, specifically: Team and culture building; Talent acquisition; Talent management; Leadership development; Employee and clinician engagement; Compensation and benefits; and Performance management systems.

They must also be able to engage as a peer with the executive leadership team, the Board of Trustees, community partners, donors, patients and families, and other external stakeholders.
  • Organizational Leadership Skills: The successful candidate will have a proven ability to recruit, develop, motivate, and retain exceptional talent and help key partners do so, too. They will be skilled at getting individuals, teams, and an entire organization to perform at a higher level, and to embrace change. The candidate will be known for building and leading world-class teams with a strong service orientation and the ability to work seamlessly across organizational boundaries to make significant and sustainable improvements.

EDUCATION

  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Healthcare Administration, Business, or related field is preferred.
