Valley Health System (“Valley Health”) is a not-for-profit regional healthcare provider based in Paramus, New Jersey, serving northern New Jersey and southern New York. Valley Health’s three main entities include:
- The Valley Hospital: A new 371-bed, fully accredited acute-care hospital, located in Paramus, New Jersey, offering comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, including a comprehensive Cancer Center, Center for Childbirth, Center for Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery, a Total Joint Replacement Center, a Neuroscience Center, Valley LifeStart: The Center for Weight and Wellness, a Center for Sleep Medicine, The Gamma Knife Center, and the Kireker Center for Child Development, among others. In 2024, 58,290 individuals were admitted to Valley, 78,286 people were treated in the Emergency Department, and 3,905 babies were born. On April 14, 2024, the hospital was formally moved to a specially designed new facility in Paramus with all private inpatient rooms, from nearby Ridgewood, where the system maintains a large, state-of-the art outpatient complex. In 2023, The Valley Hospital provided $150,382,758 in uncompensated care attributed to charity care, bad debt and Medicaid & Medicare shortfalls. In addition, they sponsor more than 1,000 community health programs, services and screenings that provide thousands of community residents with much-needed health information and preventive education
- Valley Medical Group (VMG): A growing multispecialty physician practice with over 520 clinicians, with over 90 practices across 36 locations. VMG employs specialists in 48 adult and 12 pediatric specialties, providing over 65% of the admissions and procedures and over 50% of the births performed at The Valley Hospital. Valley Medical Group spans eight service lines: Primary and Walk in Care, Children’s Services, Women’s Services, Medical Specialties, Oncology, Cardiology, Surgery and Hospitalists. Valley Medical Group also provides the bulk of the faculty for Valley’s GME program with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Enhancing their care, VMG also has a prestigious alliance with Mount Sinai Health System which means their doctors are collaborating with the top physician leaders in medicine today.
- Valley Home Care: An award-winning home health agency proudly serving the residents of Bergen and Passaic counties with a comprehensive range of high-quality services, including adult, maternal and child health programs, rehabilitation therapy, and hospice/palliative care. With a strong commitment to patient-centered care and clinical excellence, Valley Home Care (VHC) serves 12,000 patients annually and maintains the leading market share in their service area. In 2024, VHC achieved an operating margin of 8.4%, reflecting their operational efficiency, financial stability, and sustained demand for their services. - The Valley Hospital Foundation: The fundraising arm of Valley Health System. A 501 (c) (3) charitable organization, its purpose is to raise funds that support the programs and services of The Valley Hospital, Valley Medical Group and Valley Home Care.
- The Valley Hospital Auxiliary: Established in 1944, and serving as a community liaison to the hospital, the Auxiliary was a major catalyst in the founding of the hospital, raising funds and establishing community support years before the hospital opened. The Role
Valley Health System (VHS) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Vice President, Finance & Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead its financial strategy and operations. This is a pivotal role for a forward-thinking financial executive to join a respected, mission-driven healthcare organization during a period of growth and innovation. The CFO will be instrumental in ensuring the fiscal health of the system, its subsidiaries, and affiliates, while supporting strategic initiatives and operational excellence.
The CFO is an astute and savvy leader with a proven track record of making a significant mark within the healthcare system characterized by high quality, an aspirational mission, and a high level of employee and community engagement and pride. The CFO is responsible for effective participation and oversight in the integrated strategic and financial planning and overall leadership and direction for the financial strategy and financial operations of Valley Health. This executive leader will also be responsible for healthcare and payor strategies, including the development and deployment of the strategic initiatives in support of Valley Health and its mission.
The successful candidate will carry out financial policies and guidelines relating to accounting, budgeting, accounts receivables, and patient billing. The CFO will also direct and coordinate capital formation, investments, and other business activities. This role has direct participation with the Board and will serve on the Valley Health executive leadership team. Reporting to and working closely with the CEO, the CFO will also partner with other members of senior leadership and the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategies across the organization. This includes comprehensive approaches to meet Valley Health’s short- and long-term financial and growth goals. The CFO must adapt to a continually evolving environment, deeply understand the healthcare market, and thrive in a collaborative and fast-paced workplace.
The CFO will establish themselves as a respected leader in quality care in the region, and beyond, through integrated and innovative care delivery approaches. This leader will also play an essential role in enterprise communications and as a brand ambassador internally and externally in the community.
The Candidate
Key Responsibilities
The CFO must possess the following professional and personal attributes to effectively be a trusted leader within Valley Health System and successfully execute the responsibilities of this position:
- Serves as the chief financial advisor to the Valley Health System senior executive team. Functions as enterprise thought leader in financial strategy and operations related to Valley Health’s goals and growth efforts to support the continued top care of the communities it serves. Establishes the strategic financial direction for VHS along with the Board of Trustees and CEO.
- Directs and has managerial responsibility for finance, accounting, budgeting, managed care contracting, revenue cycle, internal audit, accounts payable, treasury, and revenue integrity.
- Leads financial planning and forecasting strategies that enable decision making. Establishes an integrated strategic and financial planning process compatible with VHS’ objectives.
- Partners with the executive team and colleagues on mergers and acquisitions and expansions into new and different lines of business. Promotes high quality, innovation, and process improvement within areas of responsibility.
- Seeks opportunities to incorporate more automation and standardization into work processes. Promotes a technology-driven organization.
- Prepares annual operating and capital budget for Board approval. Prepares monthly reports to management and the Board that summarize major variances from budget.
- Participates in strategic operational planning aligned with organizational goals, contributing to clinical effectiveness, new business development, workforce matters, revenue management, cost containment, and productivity.
- Engages the Board around issues, trends, and changes in the operating model and delivery. Assures the Board and CEO of adequate internal controls and provides testing of such controls with disclosure to the CEO and the Board. Monitors and reports the hospital's performance as compared to its peers and local competitors.
- Coordinates Internal Audits.
- Reviews, interprets, analyses, and communicates financial reports and data to leadership, Valley Health, and the Board of Trustees using financial ratio analysis to measure the organization’s financial position. Serves as staff to the Board.
- Provides leadership in establishing and navigating fee-for-service and risk-based contracting strategies, programs, and performance, and participates in health plan benefit design. Negotiates all hospital agreements with managed care payers (HMOs, PPOs, etc.) in collaboration with the managed care leadership team.
- Ensures compliance with CMS regulations, federal actions, and NJ Hospital Association decisions affecting fiscal management. Ensures compliance with governmental/regulatory agencies and third-party payer directives.
- Participates in corporate policy development as part of the senior leadership team.
- Develops tools and systems to provide critical financial and operations information to the CEO and makes actionable recommendations on strategy and operations.
- Assists in establishing yearly objectives and meeting agendas, and selecting and engaging outside consultants (auditors, investment advisors, etc.).
- Represents Valley Health System to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, foundation executives, auditors, and public officials.
- Demonstrates positive behaviors toward patients, families, physicians, and all colleagues. Responds to customers of all age groups in a friendly, prompt, and caring manner while maintaining confidentiality.

- Participates in the hospital’s performance improvement process to continuously improve the quality of patient care and service delivery, as well as the financial health of the system.

Experience and Professional Qualifications
The successful candidate will be a visionary leader with strong strategic skills, exceptional communications skills, and a record of accomplishment of fostering transparent, positive relationships with clinicians, leaders, teams, and board members. Candidates should have the vision and drive to lead an organization in its continued quest to be a best-in-class workplace. The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:
- Possess an advanced degree in health services (MHA), business administration (MBA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
- Minimum of ten (10) years of accounting and finance experience with at least seven (7) of those in supervisory/leadership positions leading direct reports, outside consultants, and project teams. Three (3) to four (4) years of experience should be directly in the healthcare field or in the public accounting field performing audits for a healthcare organization or intermediary.
- Managed care negotiation and contracting experience with the ability to develop financial models in support of various types of contracts. Experience maintaining a thorough working knowledge of federal, state, and managed care reimbursement payment methodologies.
- Experience in evaluating new business opportunities including acquisition and development.
- A savvy, forward-thinking executive with the ability to strategically guide the organization in financial matters, help the organization meet new challenges and capitalize on new opportunities, including innovative partnerships and fresh lines of business.
- Strategic thinker, thought leader, and brand ambassador who is articulate and has an engaging personality/charisma.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to collaborate, influence, and build connections / coalitions across multiple levels of internal and external stakeholders.
- Possess technical and professional accounting skills, ability to develop financial and other operational systems to accurately control the organization’s activities.
- Must be a flexible, adaptable, and proactive leader with the ability to manage the evolving healthcare laws and regulations. Keeps up with trends and responds by helping the system meet consumers on their terms, increasing profitability or funding.
- Experience leading finance, accounting, budgeting, managed care contracting, revenue cycle, internal audit, accounts payable, treasury, and revenue integrity.
