Corpus Christi, the largest city on the Texas Coast and home to the sixth-largest port in the nation, has evolved into a vital economic hub. Since its incorporation in 1852, the city has grown into a center for petrochemical production, tourism, healthcare, retail, education, shipping, agriculture, and military operations.
The city operates under a home-rule government with a mayor, eight council members, and a city manager who oversees daily operations. In 1983, Corpus Christi adopted single-member districts to ensure equitable representation across its diverse communities. Today, the city supports over 40 boards and commissions that connect residents with local government. It provides a wide range of public services, including police, fire, emergency medical services, parks, libraries, and utilities such as water, wastewater, gas, and recycling.
Corpus Christi is also recognized for its proactive infrastructure planning, particularly in water resource management. The city maintains over 1,600 miles of water mains and operates six treatment plants with a combined capacity of 42.7 million gallons per day. In response to the 1996 drought, the city partnered with regional authorities to construct the 101-mile Mary Rhodes Pipeline and secure additional water sources like the Garwood trans-basin diversion. These efforts underscore Corpus Christi’s commitment to sustainability and long-term regional resilience.
