ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) offered its first examinations in 1970 under the auspices of the Association of Operating Room Technologists (AORT) Advisory and Exam Committee. The Liaison Council on Certification of the Surgical Technologist (LCC-ST) was established in 1974 as the certifying agency for surgical technologists. The LCC-ST was incorporated separately from the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST, formerly AORT), in 1992, and was re-named the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting in 2005.
Today, NBSTSA is organized as a 501c (6) organization and is solely responsible for all decisions regarding certification from determining eligibility to maintaining, denying, granting, and renewing the designation.
The purpose of NBSTSA is to determine, through examination, if an individual has acquired both theoretical and practical knowledge of surgical technology or surgical first assisting. In addition, through the acquisition of continuing education credits or by re-examination, certified surgical technologists (CSTs) certified after August 31, 1977, and all CST/CSFAs are required to stay up to date with changes in the medical field.
Certification as a surgical technologist or surgical first assistant demonstrates that the individual meets the national standard for knowledge that underlies surgical technologist and surgical first assistant practice. Certification exhibits an individual’s pride in the profession, the desire to be recognized for mastery of scientific principles, as well as an ongoing commitment to patient care.
Today, NBSTSA certifies nearly 92,000 CSTs and CSFAs in the United States.
NBSTSA Mission
The mission of the NBSTSA is to be the gold standard provider of professional certification of surgical technologists (CST®) and surgical first assistants (CSFA®), supporting continuing education, thus promoting superior patient care in the surgical setting.
CST Certification
Individuals who have graduated from a program in surgical technology accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) are eligible to sit for the CST examination. CSTs recertify every two years.
CSFA Certification
Individuals who have graduated from a program in surgical first assisting accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) are eligible to sit for the CSFA examination.
Accreditation
The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) reviews and grants accreditation to the NBSTSA for its administration of both the CST and CSFA certifications. The CST and CSFA certification programs are currently accredited by NCCA through April 30, 2025.
