The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), the first children’s hospital in the nation, is a 600+ bed, academically based, internationally renowned, integrated healthcare delivery system specializing in the care of children from birth through age 19; in addition, the hospital provides care to select groups of adults with pediatric conditions that require CHOP expertise to manage. Translational research is at the core of the Research Institute. Those treatments and approaches in turn generate new research questions and observations that CHOP investigators bring back to their programs. Children's Hospital is committed to researching and finding cures for chronic and fatal pediatric illnesses. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia seeks to appoint a Senior Vice President, Innovation Ventures (SVP). The SVP is a dynamic and forward-thinking leader who will lead a team of licensing, business development, and investment professionals who collectively serve as the primary gateway for researchers seeking to commercialize their discoveries. The team will facilitate these efforts by connecting with the private sector through corporate-sponsored research collaborations, licensing discussions, or connections with entrepreneurs and investors to support startup company formation. The team will provide comprehensive step-by-step service to faculty starting with invention assessment and intellectual property support, followed by business mentoring and connections to early-stage capital. The leader will build a team of experts to facilitate the creation of corporate research alliances and collaborations to accelerate the development of promising research. Innovation Ventures will enable the translation, commercial development, and licensing of groundbreaking research discoveries and technologies. This leader drives the successful development and execution of entrepreneurship activities related to scientific translation that will accelerate CHOP's success in commercialization efforts of research output and secure our reputation as the leading center for entrepreneurship and innovation activities related to scientific translation.

The SVP, Innovation Ventures is responsible for teams leading all research related commercialization activities and developing industry relations across the Research Institute as well as entrepreneurship activities. This individual will be responsible for further fostering an institutional sea change incorporating entrepreneurial thought processes throughout the enterprise. The SVP will create a centralized hub for managing existing and future commercialization opportunities and entrepreneurial/ innovation projects, thereby ensuring the diversification of CHOP revenue streams to offset dwindling external sources of income and ensuring continued/growth of funding for research and development. Responsibilities will also include the successful execution of commercialization of intellectual property generated within the organization through technology transfer initiatives and new company development.

This individual must be capable of fostering a culture of innovation at the intersection of academia and industry while effectively managing legal and financial considerations to drive the successful commercialization of intellectual property. Key to the role is an ability to adapt to evolving market trends, regulatory changes, and the dynamic nature of investing in a not-for-profit academic medical center setting while possessing a willingness to explore innovative financial models and impact-driven investment structures. The SVP, Innovation Ventures will build and lead a team which can assess competitive advantages and challenges, market opportunity, and additional development, helping facilitating licensing of technology or guiding new companies to develop successful teams and be poised for success, helping make the connections and introductions required to start and advance new companies. The SVP will lead a team that will mentor faculty and assist them in developing startup business plans and pitch decks, identifying spinout management, and engaging external commercial funding partners. The SVP will have contacts in the entrepreneurial ecosystem to connect our faculty with necessary startup creation and venture support. As a key member of the Chief Scientific Officer's leadership team, the SVP will partner with leaders across the enterprise in support of CHOP's mission of patient care, education, and research, and will be expected to participate in a range of activities to demonstrate executive presence in support of this mission.

Primary responsibilities include:

 Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for technology transfer and commercialization activities.

 Provide vision and direction to align the office with the broader goals and mission of the organization.

 Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for building and maintaining productive partnerships with industry leaders, government agencies, and other external stakeholders.

 Identify and support entrepreneurial opportunities, including the creation of start-ups, incubators and other ventures that align with CHOP’s academic mission.

 Build and lead a multidisciplinary, high-performing team, fostering collaboration and a culture of innovation while providing mentorship and guidance to staff involved in commercialization, industry relations, and related functions.

 Develop a single point of entry commercialization innovation funnel to intake and triage application evaluation, providing visibility across the portfolio, enhancing transparency about decision-making processes, optimizing the approach to selecting commercialization pathways, and fostering the maturation of technologies.

 Develop a stage gated, milestone driven de-risking process that incorporates comprehensive due diligence evaluations that consider existing IP, the science, clinical indication, market size, regulatory, and reimbursement opportunity.

 Establish parameters to define the IP potential through development of a research plan, deploy market scan and survey of industry interest to identify sponsors, and delineation of business case hypotheses and plan development.

 Leverage outside investment to reduce risk.

 Formalize the management team and business plan, solidify milestones, timelines, budget, financing, and strategy. Prepare for licensing or partnership.

 Create internal investment vehicles to facilitate early-stage development of potential “spin outs” and

 Cultivate and strengthen relationships with pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, medical device manufacturers, and other relevant industries while possessing strong negotiation skills to ensure deals are structured for maximal institutional benefit.

 Collaborate with industry partners to advance mutually beneficial projects and initiatives.

 Support start-ups through a life cycle approach whereby there is active engagement prior to startup/spin out and after establishment. This will involve facilitating introductions to key experts and investors, promotion at events and related opportunities, and passive management of portfolios.

 Identify, and facilitate execution on, external revenue opportunities for CHOP including but not limited to: New top line streams, co-investment vehicles, corporate, sovereign and/or channel distribution partnerships. Direct and lead each entrepreneurial opportunity to the appropriate funding channel (Joint Venture, CHOP investment, etc.). Implement all business case strategies and any other commercialization avenues.

 Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations and ethical standards governing commercialization, technology transfer and external collaborations.

 Collaborate with legal counsel to review and approve legal documents.

 Enumerate and adhere to guardrails such as minority position in startups, no fiduciary duties to startups, conflict management in accordance with institutional conflicts of interest policy.

The SVP will be an innovative, self-starting, collaborative, and thoughtful leader with proven experience navigating a complex, scaled environment and drive meaningful transformation.

The following experience and skills are critical:

 At least 10+ years of leading, managing, and/or supervising innovative development into successful commercial opportunities through development of start-ups, new business development or similar, preferably in an academic medical or research setting.

 Knowledge of drug and device development preferred.

 Demonstrated success in learning new areas of science and translating them into business opportunities preferred.

 Tech transfer experience preferred.

 Demonstrated expertise in leading end to end strategy development through execution and operationalization.

 Effective organizational & planning skills; ability to work with and through others to accomplish tasks outside of direct span of control.

 Effective communication skills; capacity to work with a wide range of internal & external stakeholders from diverse cultural, professional, organizational and functional backgrounds.
