Korn Ferry has partnered with a well-established and rapidly expanding telecommunications/fiber company on a search for a General Counsel, Senior Vice President, reporting directly to the CEO. The role will be based in Phoenix. This organization was originally established as a family-owned company providing basic telecom services to rural Arizona communities.

Now backed by a leading private equity firm, the company is expanding aggressively and investing in best-in-class infrastructure, operations, and leadership to drive its mission forward while still maintaining its roots as a family-owned business that prioritizes providing exceptional customer service with a personal touch and fostering a supportive work environment for employees.

The General Counsel will play a critical role in providing strategic legal guidance to the C-Suite and board and building the legal function to support this growth. The successful candidate will be an excellent collaborator (as opposed to someone who works best in a “silo”) who is able to achieve consensus from multiple stakeholders. While this role will have significant responsibilities, it will also offer flexibility and good work life balance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure compliance and thorough due diligence with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Establish, continuously access and enhance legal operations and processes and legal strategies that align with objectives, will mitigate risks, scale with company’s growth, promote efficiency and compliance, integrated seamlessly with other business functions, and adapt to changing needs
  • Oversee negotiation drafting and vendor and third-party contract management
  • Provide legal guidance on corporate governance matters
  • Advise on employment law matters, including hiring practices, employee contracts, workplace policies and disputes; develop and implement policies to promote a positive and compliant workplace culture
  • Manage any litigation or disputes involving the company, including coordination with external legal counsel as needed
  • Provide legal support for private equity transactions, including mergers, acquisitions and investments

Key Requirements:
  • Minimum 10 years as practicing attorney
  • License to practice law, Arizona preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of Arizona law and contracts
  • Extensive background in telecommunications law, contract negotiation, employment law, employment-related issues and private equity
  • Proven track record in managing legal aspects of organizational transitions
  • Proven track record of implementing effect change management strategies
  • Strong executive presence with the proven ability in explaining complex legal issues simply to wide audiences
  • Proven ability to providing constructive feedback and supporting junior team members
  • Ability to work collaboratively and achieve consensus among stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational skills to proactively manage multiple projects, deadlines, and new challenges
